A runner comes with a message and a request:
“We the people of the Far North are in great need of the support of the traditional leaders from the Four Directions to help us regain our spiritual strength in the face of rapidly changing times. The Elders of the Top of the World ask that you send a delegation of your Elders to our country to unite with us as a fulfillment of the ancient prophecy that one day the sacred fire will come home.”
The Elders of Greenland call upon all the indigenous peoples to gather together and hold your sacred fires. Let these fires be filled with prayers for our future and our world. In July 2009 the ashes from the sacred fires will be gathered as they travel to the Top of the World and welcomed by the Elders of Greenland.
The sacred ashes from the Four Directions form the foundation for the return of the sacred fire to Greenland and will be ceremoniously placed in the bed of the fire pit. The trees now growing in Greenland for the first time in thousands of years will be cut and carried by the Grandmothers and brought back to the fire pit in a traditional way, bound to their heads.
As the Elders of Greenland call on the Elders from the Four Directions to enter the sacred space, they themselves being the last to enter the great circle, the sound of the drums will reverberate throughout the valley. The trees, dipped in seal fat and laid on top of the sacred ashes will for the first time in thousands of years again be ready to fuel the fire in Greenland. The people of the Top of the World will light the fire with the oil of a seal oil lamp and when they do, the Sacred Fire will have returned home. The people of Greenland will have joined the sacred hoop and the circle will be complete.
Song Prayer for your 2009 Fire Event
The time has come to tell the world that we are coming home. The prophecy of rainbow ties will bring it all around. If you believe the end is near, then you will all fall down, instead pick up your heart and bless the sacred ground. we are on the great big ride, the one who lives inside, and we are going to be in for a ride, when the sky turns red again. get the people ready for me (door between heaven and earth, the elder crystal person), when the day, comes to migrate home. for if they do not prepare for this time, then evolution will always win. we are going home this time, to heaven upon earth, just have to get over the hill and walk into the dark. there a valley overgrown will give us all we need, a garden, a home and brotherhood, when the sun rises up again.
your devoted servant,
white buffalo calf woman, your twin deer mother
There shall be only one person who shall speak this prayer at the event to himself, in his heart standing next to his wife. His name is Thunder Wolf, he shall believe, our devoted true blue royal warrior of the Great Spirits. The rest of them shall not believe that White Buffalo Calf Woman has really come home! One is all that is needed...to speak the heart of the Oneness. His voice will carry us into the numinous flowing of the Heaven we await for, at the bottom of the world, the North Pole. Greeting and Blessings, your devoted servant, White Buffalo Calf Woman, your Twin Deer Mother
Embracing Mother Earth
Greenland is now a focal point for the world because of our ways of treating Mother Earth. The Icecap defines the North and is a living body born in another time long, long ago. To the people on the Top of the World, the Big Ice - the Grandfather - harbors the ancient wisdom of the earth. It is symbolic; symbolic of the endurance and the power of the natural world; symbolic of humankind's ability to alter the delicate balance of the earth. Deliberately or inadvertently, we are the blunt instrument of our ignorance, our arrogance, and our disregard for the consequences of our actions - actions that have altered the earth’s balance, symbolized most dramatically by the melting of the ice.
The traditional Native leaders of the Americas look with alarm at the world conditions - degradation and abuse of the environment, and human relationships clouded by barriers of inequality, race, gender and ethnicity. The human species has become the most voracious and abusive consumer of mother earth's resources. We are tipping the balance of life against our children and endangering our future as a species. There must be reconciliation between people and the natural world. Leaders must step forward and take responsibility for a paradigm change in the direction of current lifestyles and materialistic societies. Responsible and courageous actions must be taken to realign ourselves with the great laws of nature.
Fire & Ice 2009 is an unprecedented, cross-cultural event, gathering Elders and traditional peoples from all Nations to come together with the brightest minds and most influential and forward-thinking people of the world. The gathering consists of ceremony in connection with the Big Ice and the return of the Sacred Fire to the North, deliberations concerning global climate change, and celebration of our common humanity.
The Ice is Speaking
In the deep of winter of 1963 two young Eskimo-Kalaallit men went hunting and came to the big wall and did their ceremony. As they did so, they noticed that water was coming out of the Big Ice way up the wall. When they returned and told the Elders of that strange phenomenon - no one believed them. How could water move, when the temperature has been less than minus 30 degrees Celsius (-22 ºF) for about three months. Later that winter other Elders went hunting and upon returning confirmed that water was trickling out of the Big Ice at the Big Wall. That became the first sign that something was amiss - not at home - but in the world.
Today that trickle has grown to roaring rivers of water pouring out of the Big Ice into the Atlantic Ocean. Since that first trickle was noticed the average depth of the Icecap has shrunk from five kilometers (three miles) to three (2 miles), and the melt is accelerating. Today there are hundreds of roaring rivers coming off the Icecap year round. In geological terms the rapidity of ice melt in Greenland is instantaneous.
The melting Icecap is the most dramatic evidence of accelerating global climate change. The certainty is that our world is changing, and those changes will alter our way of life at best, and destroy them at worst. To be confronted with the changes in Greenland is to have that reality dramatically brought home to us.
We are ignoring both the scientists and the wisdom keepers who are alerting us - comparing our society to that of a child playing with fire. Our ultimate arrogance is that we believe we can shape the outcome to our advantage. The Big Ice is our silent rebuke.
